I love being alive. I find it astonishing that we’re born from this extraordinary planet into responsive & expressive bodies, with enough consciousness to reach out in an endless game of peekaboo: you see me & I see you.
What a gift. What a wild ride!
I didn’t always feel this way. I was a lonely and frightened kid. My fairy godfather, though, made it his mission to help me be less afraid. James taught me to sing & dance freely, that turning over stones could mean finding newts. He showed me that creative play can be an act of delight & devotion.
Other practices followed: authentic movement, psychotherapy, Paganism, Iyengar yoga, plus some more esoteric helpers. Queerness opened more doors, inviting original ways of living.
My professional life is in audio journalism. I’ve made many stories that drop us in or carry us away. Over time, though, I grew more interested in letting go of personal narratives to listen for something deeper.
In 2016, I walked into my first 5Rhythms class, just another anxious & overwhelmed New Yorker. I left remembering who I am & what I care about. Since then, 5Rhythms has been my church, laboratory & magic carpet. Through grief, toxic stress & compounding trauma, the practice—and community—have kept me coming home to myself.
The latest loop-de-loop of this wild ride is being called to teach 5Rhythms. I want to give back. As a 5Rhythms teacher-in-training I hope to foster a more diverse community where everyone feels welcome. So that we can each discover more capacity in our bodies, in community, on the earth.
So that we all love life a little more.
