All bodies, identities and backgrounds are welcome on the floor. This is for people who want more understanding, more discovery, more delight, more capacity, more connection...
This is an opportunity for you to pay attention to your body & being, and discover what's ready to move. It is not a structured dance class teaching you particular steps. All you need is your sense of adventure.
You'll want to be able to move comfortably, so wear something that makes that possible. The class ranges from quiet to high-energy, so please wear something you can sweat in, and maybe some layers you can add or remove. We dance barefoot or in dance shoes--no street shoes, please.
5Rhythms Waves classes move through flowing, staccato, chaos, lyrical and stillness. The music supports your movement within and between the rhythms. It could be anything: trance, R&B, house, world music, hip hop, folk, disco, classical, you name it. The music will vary depending on the day and change with the vibe in the room.
This is an individual practice, but by practicing together we often find greater capacity for a deeper, wilder, truer dance. Part of the invitation is to drop your personality and worldly concerns, so we don't talk or use electronic devices during the practice.
Partnering may arise, but the primary practice is dancing your own dance. This is a non-verbal space, so please be attentive to physical cues about whether someone is available for partnering—in contact or otherwise. If it’s not a clear yes, it’s a no. Touch without consent is never okay.
